The vikings arrive in style with this truly epic album.
First off, I"ll let you know I"m writing this review as one of Within Temptation"s biggest fans. The Silent Force has barely left my CD player, until now. Vinland Saga is sneaking its way up the league table of my favourite albums, and it gets better with every listen.
Vinland Saga beats the band"s previous offering, Lovelorn, hands down. This album demonstrates a great deal of time, effort and dedication, as well as a common love for the mythical norse theme. Rather than being gimmicky, each track blends nordic, medieval elements and instruments with beautifully written tracks including Misseri, Solemn Sea and Farewell Proud Men (possibly my three favourite song from the album).
If you thought the Intro on Within Temptation"s The Silent Force was epic, just wait until you hear the intro and outro on this album...a three minute ballad that eases its listener into just the right mood before he or she is bombarded with Farewell Proud Men. The outro, Ankomst, contains medieval string instruments which compliment the Norwegian lyrics perfectly.
With the bonus edition of the CD, listeners will also find a very nice bonus track, "Heal", as well as a reworking of their Lovelorn track "For Amelie", a ballad which has particularly breathtaking lyrics.
A word of warning...some tracks here contain "growling". I generally do not like growling, however, there are several exceptions, and this album is one of those. The growling here isn"t overpowering or unpleasant, and it accompanies Liv Kristine"s soaring vocals very nicely
And now for a track run down:
1. Vinland Saga - a gorgeous opener, sets the theme and the sound that the rest of the album will follow.
2. Farewell Proud Men - one of the album"s strongest points, a pounding headbanger of a track.
3. Elegy - the first single to be released from the album, there is some nice power guitar to be found here.
4. Solemn Sea - Our first introduction to the growls, and also one of my favourite songs here.
5. Leaves" Eyes - an amicable ballad that brings us down a notch before the metalling kicks off again!
6. The Thorn - don"t be deceived by the beginning; this track packs a punch.
7. Misseri - a slow tempo yet heavy track, this one is my personal choice for best track on the album.
8. Amhran - another interval ballad that acts as a break before the finale tracks.
9. New Found Land - a great track, a real headbanger, with its cheesy cheers of "yeah!" in between Liv"s lines. Be sure to find live audiences cheering along here!
10. Mourning Tree - a treat of a ballad, mourning tree is a nice wind down.
11. Twilight Sun - as the title suggests, this song is our last heavy offering; sombre and moody, a very fitting track.
12. Ankomst - I have never heard traditional instruments quite like this. The strings here are very gorgeous. The lapping waves at the beginning and end are also a very nice touch
