The Rolling Stones 也许早在20世纪的中期后就已显露发迹的端倪，而到了60年代末期，这支与 The Beatles 齐名的英国演唱组就俨然自诩为世界上最伟大的摇滚乐队了。
乐队名称的由来与美国已故的布鲁斯歌手/吉他演奏家/作曲家 Muddy Waters 的一首歌曲有关。
乐队最初的经纪人 Andrew Loog Oldham 虽不很懂音乐，但却擅长音乐推广, 是他塑造了 the Rolling Stones 和 the Beatles 迥然不同的歌坛形象 --- 天生叛逆，狂放不羁的坏小子，但同时却处处透着锐利狡黠的气息。
因各种原因，在长期的歌坛生涯中，乐队成员进出频繁，故事颇多。其中值得一提的是 Brain Jones [Guitar & Vocals，Feb., 26, 1944 – July 3, 1969] 和 Bill Wyman [Bassist, Oct.,24,1936]。前者为乐队提供了强力的吉他节奏，后者则为乐队添加了纤细和多彩的段落。乐队目前的主要成员为 Mick Jagger [Vocals, July 26,1943]，Keith Richards [Guitar & Vocals, Dec.,18,1943]，Ron Wood [Guitar, June 1,1947]，和 Charlie Watts [Drummer, June 2,1943]。
该演唱组以坚毅，猛烈的布鲁斯摇滚为根，并因此定义了后继的硬式摇滚。主唱 Mick Jagger 一口大嘴，其装模作样，煞有介事的演唱风格和夸张的恶毒唱腔是乐队的标志。一般来讲，他们的音乐具有很强的攻击性和叛逆色彩。
1962年7月21日，他们在英国的一家叫 Marquee 的俱乐部进行了首次演出；1963年6月录制了第一张单曲专辑 Come On；1965年夏天发行的歌曲 I Can't Get No) Satisfaction 使他们跻身流行乐坛超级明星行列；1968年的 Beggar's Banguet 被媒体认为是经典；1994年凭借专辑 Voodoo Lounge 夺得 Grammy 最佳硬摇滚专辑奖。 Please allow me to introduce myself
