The Clash与Sex Pistol一齐被称为英国朋克运动之父。1976年在组成了乐队并和Sex Pistol进行了《Anarchy in the UK》巡演后在1977年与CBS公司签约并在同年推出了首张专辑《The Clash》并在英国排行榜上列12位并被立即认为是朋克乐的一张经典唱片。因为他将简单露骨的语言和带有毁灭性的灵歌曲调进行了有效的结合这些都直白的道出了朋克乐的精髓。也确立了The Clash在朋克乐中的地位。其中的单曲“White Riot”至今仍被认为是朋克乐中的经典歌曲。1978年乐队推出了第二张专辑《Give’Em Enough Rope》。其中的单曲《Tommy Gun》更是排行榜第19名的热门单曲。1979年12月乐队发行了双专辑《London Calling》这张专辑既保持了原来的风格又开始追求多样的风格。同时这张专辑也是乐队最畅销的专辑。1980年12月乐队发行了三张的专辑《Sandinista！》反响不一。1982年乐队发行了第五张专辑《Combat Rock》并取得了巨大的成功，其中的《Rock the Cashah》更获得了最佳国际金曲。此后乐队进了的不小的人员变动，并沉寂了不断的时间。1985年乐队发行了最后一张专辑《Cut the Crap》当并没获得很好的反响，就在要为该唱片进行巡演前乐队宣布解散。直到现在亦无重组的迹象。
